Keeping the Fur From Flying -- Veterinarians Turn to Central Vacuums for Hair, Dander Control

Veterinarians and other pet care providers are relying on central vacuum systems to create healthier exam and treatment rooms for pets and pet owner. The systems assure quick cleanups and prevent the spread of pet hair, dander and other allergens.

Andover, KS (PRWEB) August 16, 2010

When new clients bring their dogs and cats to Countryside Pet Clinic many express surprise that the clinic is quiet and virtually odor free. Dr. Kevin Cederberg, the veterinarian who founded the practice and a pet resort in suburban Wichita, credits much of the clinic’s hospitable atmosphere to his decision to install central vacuum systems in both facilities.

“By keeping it clean, you’re definitely removing a lot of the regular and perceived odors of a veterinary clinic,” Cederberg says. “Quietness is a big thing for us. You can get the vacuuming done with a critical-care patient present or with clients in the waiting room or exam rooms and they’re really not aware of a vacuum at all.”

Allen Ibsen, a veterinarian from Brookfield, Wis., who designs veterinary clinics across the country, has long included central vacuum systems in his designs.

“It takes a lot of labor to keep the veterinary hospitals clean,” says Ibsen. “I encourage central vacuums in the hospitals that I design for convenience and to speed up the cleaning process.”

From a business standpoint, the faster the cleaning process between appointments enhances staff efficiency and may allow veterinarians to serve more patients each day.

Cheney Door Co., a BEAM Central Vacuum System dealer, installed the first system for Cederberg in 1996 and recently replaced the unit with the BEAM Serenity QS power unit which quietly delivers 600 air watts of cleaning power – up to five times more powerful than a traditional upright or canister vacuum. A BEAM system also is installed in the neighboring Pet Resort, which provides day-care and boarding services for dogs and cats, including patients from the clinic.

Kenny Bomholt, sales manager at Cheney Door says that pet care industry represents a growing segment of his business. “Having a central vacuum system allows a veterinarian or even a pet grooming business to keep their facilities cleaner and to clean more quickly and that allows them to care for more pets,” he says.

Cederberg noted that his system is in constant use when patients are prepped for surgeries and to prevent hair from the surgical site during the procedures.

“Dogs and cats tend to shed more when they’re excited or nervous so we see a lot more hair that flies around,” Cederberg says.

Pet dander, especially cat dander, is a leading allergy trigger in humans and Cederberg says installing a central vacuum system in the home may be a smart decision for allergic pet owners. In fact, Cederberg recently installed a central vacuum in his own home.

“Anything we can do to reduce exposure to the dander and the hair, that’s good.”

If your cat is taller than 16.48 inches from shoulder to toe, then he or she may have the opportunity to be immortalized in the famous Guinness Book of World Records. Dr. Jennifer Yee of the VCA Hemingway Cat Hospital in Saratoga, Calif., will be measuring cats to ensure that strict and proper protocols are followed in keeping with the guidelines set forth by the Guinness World Records™ organization. If you want your cat to compete, fill out the entry form at Jazzy Cats and be officially measured! Your cat may have a spot in the famous Guinness Book of World Records!

In addition, Marilyn Krieger, noted Certified Cat Behavior Consultant who is known as The Cat Coach, will demonstrate clicker training on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m. Contrary to popular myth, cats can easily be trained to do tricks such as sitting, shaking hands and jumping through hoops. The Cat Coach and her willing co-teachers, beautiful Savannah and Bengal cats, will educate attendees on the basics of clicker training. Krieger also will offer her expertise on how to solve inappropriate elimination challenges in cats during a talk scheduled for Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Throughout the TICA Annual event, Dr. Yee and Krieger will be available to answer any veterinary or cat behavior questions. The event will also offer the exciting Savannah-Rama where spectators come and meet the various generations of Savannahs from F1 onward and have the opportunity to talk to the owners and breeders. Most people have only seen this breed in magazines and on TV so this is a wonderful opportunity to have your questions answered. Saturday, during the lunch time break, there will be a "fun ring" where all the Savannahs are informally judged. Rosettes for best ears, tail and even for the biggest clown will be awarded. Savannah Cats are one of TICA's newest and fastest growing cat breeds and have been featured on Cats 101 and CNN.

In addition, there will be lots of vendors with interesting items for sale for both cats and people.

“You don’t have to have the tallest cat in the world. Just come to the TICA Annual and enjoy the show,” comments Gloria Mahan, Show Manager of Jazzy Cats, who is hosting the event. “I guarantee that you will meet some of the most beautiful cats in the world!”

General admission tickets prices are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and children between the ages of 6-12, free for children under age 6. For $2 off admission, print out and bring the Jazzy Cat coupon

Pet Insurance Can Offer Peace of Mind in a Strained Economy

Pet health care still ranks important when money is tight.

Seattle, WA (Vocus) August 9, 2010

Despite the economic downturn, spending on pets continues to increase, and veterinary care is at the top of the list. Pet owners are looking for ways to ease the financial burden of high veterinary bills, and are increasingly turning to pet insurance. Trupanion, a pet insurance company, has doubled in size each year for the last three years, as many pet owners start seeing pet health coverage as a necessity rather than a perk. Pet owners are looking for a simple plan that covers everything – accident, illness, medication, and lab work – and are finding it at Trupanion.

Pet industry spending grew 4.63% between 2008 and 2009 and is expected to grow another 5.53% in 2010, according to a report by the American Pet Products Association, showing that pet owners are still increasing their spending in categories like food, supplies, grooming, boarding, and veterinary care.

However, a report released by the Commerce Department Tuesday showed flat personal spending in June and the weakest income in nine months. A 9.5% unemployment rate adds to the lack of disposable income, and those who are employed are not making any more than they did last year, according to the report.

Yet, a study by BNResearch titled “Perceptions and Attitudes of Pet Owners: The Impact of the Bond” showed that 76% of pet owners would spend any amount to keep their pet healthy, and 52% of pet owners would always do what a vet recommends, regardless of cost. It seems as if pet owners are shelling out more for their pets than for themselves.

“In tough economic times, pet owners are searching for ways to bridge the gap between the increasing costs of quality pet care and their ability to pay, particularly when an unexpected major illness or injury occurs,” says Howard Rubin, Chief Operating Officer at Trupanion and founding CEO of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues. “It decreases the financial strain and emotional stress a pet owner feels if the unthinkable happens.”

According to the APPA, dog owners spend an average of $219 on veterinary visits annually and cat owners spend an average of $175. Veterinary care is the second highest spending category behind food, with $12.04 billion spent in 2009.

Pet owners make up a majority of the population, with 62% of U.S. households owning a pet. If they continue to spend as they have been, this could be good news for the economy.

PetAg Initiates Comprehensive Pet Nutrition and Safety Education Program

Leading Pet Nutrition Manufacturer To Implement Education Program For Animal Food Safety

Hampshire, IL (PRWEB) August 10, 2010

PetAg today announced the creation of a comprehensive program designed to inform and educate consumers on pet nutrition safety and proper storage of their newly improved KMR and Esbilac powdered milk product for infant animals.

As part of PetAg’s Safety Education Program, they have revised the packaging to provide consumers with even clearer instructions for handling and storage. Consumers can sign up on PetAg’s website to receive emailed updates on product information and educational materials.

PetAg’s 70-year history of innovation in the manufacturing of pet nutrition products has led them to be one of the most trusted manufacturers of pet products in the USA. Their products have been used to care for millions of animals worldwide. As a trusted partner of pet owners and veterinarians, PetAg continually examines all of their products and processes to ensure best practices and best nutrition for pets.

In this economy when people are looking to trim costs in every possible corner, pet professionals and pet owners may hold onto product beyond the “best by” date, or longer than advised on labels after opening. Recent FDA announcements on infant animal nutrition safety indicate that consumers should follow labeled advice completely in order to insure their pets’ safety. It is also vitally important to store unopened or opened cans above at the recommended temperature to avoid degrading the product quality.

As with human infants, animals depend upon milk as their only source of nutrition in the early weeks of their lives. When pets are unable to nurse from their mother, milk replacement products such as PetAg’s KMR® or Esbilac® offer excellent alternatives to allow pets to get off to a good start in life. Much like formula for human infants, or any other milk product, these products have a finite shelf life, and should be used quickly once opened or prepared. This information is readily available on packaging for all products. Best-by dates only apply to manufacturer sealed products that have not been opened. The FDA advises that anyone who is concerned about the safety of a product should contact the manufacturer for further instructions and advice.

With decades of innovation and advancements behind them, PetAg brings unquantifiable knowledge to the field of pet nutrition.

“We take our place as a market leader seriously,” said Darlene Frudakis, president and COO of PetAg. “By continually testing and revising our formulas, we can bring the best alternatives to the market for our pet companions, and can educate our consumers on how best to care for their pets’ nutritional needs,” continued Frudakis.

PetAg urges consumers to review labels on stored cans to determine if they have reached or surpassed the use by date, and if so return the product to PetAg for a free replacement. PetAg also encourages consumers to contact the company at anytime if they have mixing, product storage or usage questions call 1 (800) 323-0877 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1 (800) 323-0877 end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

Summer cat crisis hits animal home

Influx of unwanted kittens puts pressure on London rescue centre. North London – The Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green is suffering from an influx of felines due to ‘kitten season’ and has had to close its Cattery doors to admittances unless there is a severe emergency case.

(PRWeb UK) July 10, 2010

All year round alarmingly high numbers of cats are abandoned and left to fend for themselves on the streets –often doing a poor job after living as domestic pets for so long. In addition to this, summer brings the arrival of ‘kitten season’ as cat owners are not prepared to look after litters when their cats become pregnant.

Currently 43% of all the felines at the Home are under six months old.

The Mayhew’s Animal Welfare Officers (AWOs) are also called out on a regular basis to rescue feral and stray litters of kittens who have been discovered in gardens, sheds or abandoned on the streets.

The Mayhew’s CEO, said: “Every year the Mayhew is put under immense pressure by the impact of kitten season. Far too many cat owners don’t neuter their pets, resulting in their cats mating with neighbouring domestic, stray and feral cats which ends with an alarming number of tiny, vulnerable kittens being born outside. The lucky ones are rescued by our Animal Welfare Officers, many are not found in time. ”

“Cat owners wishing to take responsible action can have their pet neutered at our low-cost Community Veterinary Clinic onsite at our facilities in Kensal Green.”

For anyone interested in adopting The Mayhew’s cats or kittens, please can call reception on 020 8969 0178 or visit our website: www.mayhewanimalhome.org

For the Editor
The Mayhew Animal Home was established in 1886 for the benefit of “the lost and starving dogs and cats of London so that they should have sanctuary from the cold inhumanity they are being dealt outside”. Today, The Mayhew is one of the busiest animal sanctuaries in London, rescuing thousands of animals from cruelty and neglect each year. We provide shelter and care for cats, dogs, rabbits and when the need arises, for a wide variety of other animals.

The Mayhew Animal Home strives to tackle the companion animal welfare crisis from every possible angle. The organisation is pro-active, innovative and continually works to assist animals and their carers. The Mayhew offers a wide variety of community services providing advice, care and assistance to animals and their carers whatever their circumstances.

Pets Guardian Provides A Pet Safety System, Ensuring Pets Will Be Cared For In Case of a Personal Emergency

A pleasant “day trip” can turn into a nightmare for pets and their owners, without a safety system in place. Pets Guardian Emergency Notification Service ensures pets care, if the owner can’t be there, due to an accident or other unforeseen event.

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) July 5, 2010

With vacation time here and the economic crisis affecting many Americans vacation plans, the “day trip” or “Staycation” has become more and more popular. While this saves money, and is good for local economies, it also leaves pets more vulnerable to being left behind if an owner has an accident and is unable to make it home to care for them. Unlike traditional vacations in which pet owners make arrangements for their pets care while they are away, people taking short day trips expect to be home by the late afternoon or early evening from their mini vacation, and most do not make arrangements for people to stop by and care for their pets. They don’t even necessarily tell anyone they’re gone. Cat owners in particular feel they can easily spend a night or two away from their cats if there is a litterbox, food and water left out for them. But, if something happens, and an owner cannot get home due to an accident or other unforeseen event, these pets can go for days or longer without care. How long should a pet go without food or water…is one day too long?

Pets Guardian, a Personal Emergency Notification Service, provides a pet safety system for owners, ensuring their pets will be cared for, even if the pet owner becomes incapacitated. Pets Guardian contacts a clients group of friends and neighbors that have been pre-arranged to care for the pets, when notification by a First Responder comes thru the toll free number listed on Members emergency cards.

Pets Guardian members receive Emergency Notification cards for their wallets with a specific toll free number for first responders to call. The wallet cards come with a clear plastic carrying case which also holds the members drivers license, ensuring that the emergency number will be seen by First Responders. When a First Responder calls the number on the card, this initiates the Pets Guardian response and the clients support group is contacted. In Florida, clients can add the toll free emergency number to their Motor Vehicle Drivers database, thanks to “Tiffany’s Law", enacted in 2006 to aid First Responders in getting the help victims need, quickly. Auto signs and signs for the Home, giving information about pets inside the house, are also included in the membership. This aids Fire Rescuers, especially if a home owner is not present, as there will be someone to take the pets to safety, leaving one less thing for rescuers to concern themselves with.

While Pets Guardian was originally designed as an emergency backup for active pet owners, the “stay at home” pet owners still ran the risk of their pets being left alone, if they were to have a home accident, such as a slip & fall. To cover that gap in a pets safety net, Pets Guardian introduced their Premiere Package Plan. Unlike many emergency alert services which require the client to push a button for help, the Premiere Pets Guardian service is designed as a daily check-in/check-out service. Clients receive a morning e-mail reminding them to check in with Pets Guardian for the day, and another e-mail in the evening reminds them to check out. All client check-ins and check-outs are monitored. If a Client fails to check-out for the day, or check-in the next morning, a Pets Guardian Team member attempts to contact the client. If a connection cannot be established, the client’s pre-arranged group is contacted. If all else fails, local 911 operators are notified of a potential problem. This ensures that even if a Pets Guardian client is unable to reach out for help, the help reaches out to them, and their beloved pets.

Pets Guardian started with an attempt to make sure the Founders animals were cared for with a backup plan that backfired; and a near disaster when a friend did not follow thru as requested. The Founder, a long time Pet Care Provider, knew there had to be a way to protect her pets in a professional manner so, after realizing a service like Pets Guardian didn’t exist, she started it.

Hundreds of Cats at Pennsylvania Animal Sanctuary Rescued by ASPCA With Assistance from American Humane Association & PetSmart Charities

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), at the request of the Elk County Humane Society, is removing approximately 400 cats living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions from a sanctuary known as the Animal Friends of Elk and Cameron Counties in St. Mary’s, Pa., with assistance of responders from the American Humane Association and PetSmart Charities, Inc.

s, PA (Vocus) June 25, 2010

St. Mary' The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), at the request of the Elk County Humane Society, is removing approximately 400 cats living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions from a sanctuary known as the Animal Friends of Elk and Cameron Counties in St. Mary’s, Pa., with assistance of responders from the American Humane Association and PetSmart Charities, Inc.

A search warrant was executed Thursday morning for the removal of the cats, based on complaints from individuals. The ASPCA is also collecting evidence for the investigation, as well as lending the services of its Field Investigation and Response and Animal Forensics teams.

The cats were living in overcrowded conditions on the first floor of a two-story commercial building at 930 S. St. Mary’s Road, about 120 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

“The ASPCA is grateful to be in a position to provide resources and assistance in this overwhelming situation,” said Tim Rickey, the ASPCA’s Senior Director of Field Investigation and Response. “Right now, our primary concern is to get these animals the care and treatment they so desperately need.”

“Our community desperately needs a resource for unwanted cats,” added Joanne Smith, a humane police officer for the Elk County Humane Society. “Our goal today is to help as many cats as possible and alleviate suffering, and then look at the bigger picture to determine where we go from here.”

The cats were relinquished to the Elk County Humane Society by Animal Friends and are being transferred to an emergency shelter at an undisclosed location, where they will be triaged by Dr. Melinda Merck, Senior Director of Veterinary Forensic Sciences for the ASPCA, Dr. Jason Byrd, Associate Director of the Center for Forensic Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Julie Levy, also with the University of Florida, a team of veterinary students from the University of Pennsylvania led by Dr. Michael Moyer and veterinary technicians from the ASPCA. More than 50 responders are on the scene, including staff and volunteers from the American Humane Association, which is providing sheltering services, and PetSmart Charities, which is providing much-needed supplies. The Red Cross is also providing meals for responders.

To assist in the triage, the ASPCA has on scene its Northeast-based, fully equipped “Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit,” a specially-designed vehicle outfitted with state-of-the-art forensics tools as well as medical equipment tailored for animal patients. In addition, the ASPCA’s newly deployed animal transport trailer, mobile command truck and equipment trailer are also being utilized to help transfer animals to the emergency shelter.

The cats—some loose, others in cages, some spayed and neutered, others not—include kittens and adults. According to the ASPCA’s Dr. Merck, the cats are suffering from a host of ailments, including upper respiratory conditions, eye infections and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Many are expected to test positive for the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a disease that weakens the immune system and make cats susceptible to secondary infections. Several cats were in critical condition.

“The overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, as well as the stress of coping with untreated illnesses, has resulted in severe conditions for many of these cats,” said Dr. Merck. “Every effort is being made to treat them and make them comfortable, and most appear to be friendly and well-socialized.

The investigation was set into motion after complaints about the facility were received by the Elk County Humane Society, which contacted the ASPCA for assistance.

Officials believe the cats came from a variety of sources.

The First Ever Live Online Meet and Greet Pet Adoption Event, Revolutionizing Pet Adoptions Around the World

Kent Animal Shelter, recipient of the 2009 Shelter of the Year award, and Petwebdesigner.com, a pet website design firm on Long Island, are teaming up to do the first ever real-time live online pet adoption event on July 17th, 2010 from 1 PM – 4 PM EST. The goal is to offer the entire Tri-state area of potential pet adopters a way to see pets that are available for adoption at the no-kill shelter with a live video and audio feed right from the comfort of home.

East Meadow, NY (PRWEB) June 24, 2010

In an effort to expand the reach of Kent Animal Shelter and other shelters all across the United States to a broader community rather than just their own neighborhoods, Petwebdesigner.com has developed a revolutionary website, AnimalRoulette.com, that aims to change the way pet adoptions can be done all over the world. The premise is simple. People looking to adopt pets can log onto the website, and they will be randomly put into a live video chat room with either another pet lover or a pet that is available for adoption. Pet lovers can share stories or introduce their pets to other pet lovers on the site, and people looking to adopt a pet can also find shelter animals that are looking for a new home. Kent Animal Shelter will be the first shelter to ever participate in this incredible new program. The goal is to provide an online community for pet lovers to find shelter animals they would like to adopt.

The first real time live online adoption event is scheduled for July 17, 2010 from 1 PM – 4 PM EST. People interested in adopting a pet should visit www.AnimalRoulette.com July 17 to see pets that are currently available for adoption at Kent. People visiting the site during the online event should have a web cam installed on their computer so they can take part in the live video and audio chat exchange. If they are happy with the animal or pet lover they are talking with, they can stay in the chat room. If they want to see another pet available, they can simply click “next” to enter another chat room, hence the “roulette” in the name.

“I know how much shelters in this country struggle to find homes for their animals, and I felt that today’s opportunity of real time on the Internet provided the perfect place for pet lovers all over the country to see what’s available,” said Michael Ayalon, CEO of Petwebdesigner.com. “Now potential pet adopters can come to AnimalRoulette.com and find other pet lovers and pets for adoption that need a new home. You’ll find cats and dogs for adoption of all breeds available. It gives an audience to the pets that don’t get seen every day, or that have been in a shelter a long time. We hope to make this video and audio technology improve the adoption rates for shelters all over the United States. Kent Animal Shelter was the perfect partner for the project because of their outstanding work as a no-kill shelter since 1968.”

“Over 700 animals per year are placed in new homes from Kent Animal Shelter,” commented Pamela Green, Director at Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, New York. “We are always looking for new ways to expand that number given our location and our facilities, so it makes sense to offer people looking to adopt a pet more than just a photo. They should be able to see the pet’s disposition live in order to determine if the pet would make a good addition to their family. AnimalRoulette.com gives us that ability. Once we find a match, then we would invite the adopting family to fill out the online adoption form on our website and schedule a time to complete the adoption.” Kent Animal Shelter is passionate about helping shelter animals and advocating compassion in all of their dealings with other creatures, human and otherwise.

About Kent Animal Shelter: Kent Animal Shelter has a progressive approach to rescue and their excellent community outreach, including a Pet Therapy program which reaches out to local senior centers and their low-cost spay-neuter program which performs over 4,000 spay/neuters per year. The shelter also features a retirement home for cats. Kent Animal Shelter, which participated in the rescue and re-homing efforts following Hurricane Katrina was able to reunite a dog and its owners after 18 months apart and a forced relocation by the owner to another state. Over 700 animals are placed in new homes every year and the shelter's rescue efforts reach out to animals in need across the U.S. and Caribbean. The goal of the shelter is to build a new facility to replace its aging shelter so that it can continue to expand its services to animals in need. National pet photo contest seeks lookalikes and photogenic pets.

(PRWeb UK) June 18, 2010

Vet charity PDSA has launched a national photo competition to discover the UK’s top pet ‘poseurs’. Two hilarious lookalike categories form part of this year’s competition in addition to the usual ‘cutest pet’ prize. So if your dog is the doppelganger of your Dad, or your cat is the spit of a celeb, then you could be a winner.

“We’re searching for photos that capture a pet’s likeness to a famous face or its owner,” said PDSA spokesperson, Lisa Nickless. “We also have a posing pet category, for those four-legged friends who just love showing off in front of the lens.”

Enter your pictures into PDSA’s annual Pets Gallery competition either online at www.pdsa.org.uk/petsgallery or call into one of PDSA’s stores to pick up an entry form.

Competition entrants are invited to make a minimum £1 donation to help PDSA in its work to care for sick and injured pets. The charity has seen a 20 percent increase in demand for its services since the recession, stretching the available resources, so every donation will make a difference.

“We want all pets to be completely natural, so there’s no need to dress them up in clothes or accessories,” added Lisa. “And by giving a donation, you will also be helping PDSA to provide free veterinary treatment to the pets of people in need across the UK.”

The closing date is Friday 30 July 2010. Competition winners will be announced in September.

Photographs submitted at PDSA stores will be displayed in the shop for the duration of the competition. The selected winning photographs will also feature on PDSA’s website.

PDSA regrets that it cannot return photographs. By submitting photographs entrants are agreeing to the terms and conditions* of the competition.

In 2010, delivery of PDSA PetAid services will cost more than £50 million. The charity’s PetAid services are funded entirely by public support and we receive no HM Government funding.

Trupanion Announces an Industry First in Pet Insurance

Trupanion™ now offers pet insurance with no payout limits and is the first in the industry to do so.

Seattle, WA (Vocus) June 16, 2010

Trupanion™, the fastest growing pet insurance company in North America, has announced a “No Dollar Limit” provision for their policy, an industry first. All pet insurance companies, other than Trupanion™, offer policies with various limits on what will be paid in benefits per incident, year, or lifetime.

“For pet owners, the complexities of the fine print makes comparing products difficult and determining the value even more challenging. This change to no dollar limit makes our policy easy to understand while also creating an industry best value for the pet owner,” says Darryl Rawlings, Founder and CEO.

Limits are one way that pet insurance companies protect themselves from large benefit payouts and the potential of an expanding cost of claims. Many times, caps in benefit payments are not thoroughly understood and can place a company in an adversarial position with the policyholder. By removing the cap, Trupanion™ streamlines their policy and can focus more resources on service.

Craig Wallace, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing said, “Based on our market research, 90% of pet owners are aware pet insurance exists, they just have not heard a compelling message to purchase. Our 'no dollar limit' provision realigns the value scale and places us in a unique position to be an advocate for the pet owner rather than an adversary.”

Trupanion™ is the only pet insurance provider in the United States and Canada that offers no caps on benefits, 90% coverage (less optional deducible and exam fee) and one simple plan. Along with these benefits, pet owners can select any deductible from 0 to 1,000 dollars in 5 dollar increments. A higher deductible reflects a lower monthly premium. By paying slightly higher monthly premiums and choosing a low deductible, pet owners are responsible for a smaller overall portion of their veterinary bills.

About Trupanion™
Trupanion™ pet insurance offers cat insurance and dog insurance in the United States and Canada. Trupanion™ is self-underwritten by the American Pet Insurance Company, allowing Trupanion™ to offer a customizable pet insurance policy with no benefit schedules. Enrolled pets receive lifetime coverage for diagnostic tests, surgeries, and medications if they get sick or are injured, with no incident, annual or lifetime limit. Trupanion’s mission is to protect the cherished bond between pets and their families by ensuring that pets are able to receive optimal veterinary care. Alley Cat Allies’ Atlantic City ‘Boardwalk Cats Project’ Celebrates 10 Years

Program Saves Cats’ Lives, Stabilizes Population of Feral Cats on Famous Boardwalk

Bethesda (Vocus) June 7, 2010

The next time you’re in Atlantic City, take a break from the casinos and shopping and have a look at the permanent residents living quietly under the busy planks of the city’s Boardwalk -- a colony of famous feral cats.

In 2000, Alley Cat Allies, the national advocate for stray and feral cats, launched a city-endorsed Trap-Neuter-Return program and has continued caring for the cats over the last ten years with the help of volunteers and services from the Humane Society of Atlantic County. These feral cats -- like all feral cats -- are not socialized to people and are not adapted to living indoors. Instead, the cats live healthy, natural lives in their outdoor homes.

“With Trap-Neuter-Return, the cats are humanely trapped then neutered and vaccinated by a veterinarian, which improves their lives by eliminating the stresses of mating and pregnancy,'' said Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies. ''It also prevents future litters of kittens -- which stabilizes the colony size.”

Under standard Trap-Neuter-Return protocol, the cats have the tip of their left ear removed while still under anesthesia from surgery. This ‘eartip’ identifies the cat as having been neutered and vaccinated.

After surgery, the feral cats are returned to the boardwalk where they are closely monitored. The Boardwalk Cats are given fresh food and water regularly and have comfortable shelters for the colder months. Alley Cat Allies hosts regular clean-up days to remove litter and debris in order to keep the habitats clean.

The Boardwalk Cats Project serves as a model for similar programs across the country.

BlogPaws to Hold its Second Pet Blogging and Social Media Conference September 9-11, 2010

BlogPaws, the original pet blogging and social media community, will hold its second conference, BlogPaws 2010 West, in Denver September 9-11, 2010. The event will bring pet bloggers, pet brands and the online pet community together for networking, education and to create change for pets in need.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) June 10, 2010

The event that has been dubbed “The Woodstock of the Pet Blogging Community” will be replicated this fall in Denver, CO. The founders of the first-ever pet blogging and social media conference, BlogPaws 2010, announce they are hosting BlogPaws 2010 West, a second event bringing pet bloggers, pet brands and the online pet community together for networking, education and to create change for pets in need. The event will take place September 9-11, 2010 in Denver, CO.

BlogPaws 2010 West comes on the heels of the much-acclaimed inaugural BlogPaws event, which took place April 9 & 10, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. Nearly 250 pet bloggers, media, speakers and brands came together for a weekend full of learning and inspiration. Attendees lauded this first-ever pet blogging and social media conference as “a life changing experience,” and “a visionary and progressive-thinking, paw-forward group founded by pet bloggers.”

BlogPaws 2010 West will feature dynamic keynotes and interactive education sessions covering topics pet bloggers rely on for their craft: social media strategies, search engine optimization, content development, blog monetization, product reviews, pet photography techniques, tips and tricks for using popular blogging platforms and more. The event will also feature a specific track for veterinarians interested in social media and blogging as well as special sessions for animal rescue and shelter administrators and volunteers.

The April BlogPaws event prompted throngs of pet bloggers worldwide to participate in the event’s signature movement, “Be the Change for Pets in Need.” BlogPaws 2010 West will continue to build on this program, encouraging attendees to support and promote one another’s efforts. “Some terrific initiatives have emerged as a result of the last event,” said Caroline Golon, BlogPaws co-founder. “From speaking out against puppy mills to educating others about the negatives of shock collars to lobbying against breed specific legislation, conference attendees have used their blogs and this community to find remarkable ways to make a difference for pets.”

As part of its own mission to be the change for pets in need, BlogPaws donates a portion of event proceeds to animal rescues and shelters. “The April BlogPaws event raised more than $13,000 in cash and another $4,000 in food and product donations from our sponsors for three wonderful organizations,” said BlogPaws co-founder Yvonne Divita. “In April we supported Animal Haven in New York City, Pets without Parents in Columbus, Ohio and Animal Friends in Pittsburgh. We’re looking forward to selecting three more recipients from nominations made by BlogPaws 2010 West attendees.”

Registration is underway and BlogPaws founders expect a sold out event. “It's clear that BlogPaws has struck a chord with the online pet community,” said Tom Collins, co-founder. “When you bring together people with a common passion, add an Internet connection and invite a few cats, dogs and ferrets, you have a truly remarkable group with a collective voice making things happen. We can’t wait to see what’s next.”

With Warmer Weather, Cat Urine Odor and Stains are Much More Noticeable

Cat urine odor and stains much more noticeable in warmer weather. This is an ebook outlining 18 problems and the corresponding solutions to stop cat litter box problems. It contains a checklist of the problems and solutions for the pet owner to work through, so she may keep track of what she's tried and the results gained.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 14, 2010

With the warmer weather, cat urine stains are activated by the higher humidity and heat. Cat owners notice the cat urine smell much more readily, because the bacteria in the cat urine is activated by the warm, moist air. If the cat urine stain is not located and treated, it will cause damage, perhaps permanent, to the surface it's on.

Most of the U.S. is now experiencing late spring and summer temperatures. Cat urine stains and odor can cost a renter or homeowner thousands of dollars in ruined furniture, floors and walls. Real estate agents who try to sell a home that has cat urine odor and stain issues often discover buyers want complete mitigation or elimination of the problem before they consider submitting a contract.

The ebook, "18 Ways to Stop Cat Urine Odor Problems" explains the most common reasons why cats stop using their litter boxes, and the corresponding solutions.

In addition, readers will find a detailed checklist they can print out and write on to help them go through all the causes and eliminate the source of the cat urine odor problem.

This ebook is for cat owners who are frustrated, stumped and mystified by why their cat won't use her litter box. Usually one or more of these 18 solutions is needed to permanently solve the problem, so kitty can stay with her family and the house and furniture is no longer damaged by cat urine.

Landlords and real estate agents may also find this book useful in solving cat urine problems before renting or selling a home.

Jewelry Designer to Benefit Best Friends Animal Society with Necklace Proceeds

Elena Adams Designs offers a sterling silver necklace with all proceeds benefiting the Best Friends Animal Society.

Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) August 1, 2010

Elena Adams Designs has created a sterling silver, smokey quartz and iolite necklace to be sold throughout August with all proceeds going to benefit the Best Friends Animal Society.

Owner, Elena Adams has always been committed to using her business resources to aid charities, and has previously worked to raise money for The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, Wild Care and Child's Play. She also regularly donates her jewelry for charity auctions throughout the US.

Adams grew up around animals, and they have always played an important role in her life. With so many unwanted and sick animals being abandoned to high-kill shelters, Best Friends Animal Society is dedicated to saving lives and finding homes for pets that would otherwise be euthanized.

“It makes me so sad to think that every day, people abandon their pets because they either don't want them or can’t afford their medical needs," said Adams. "Pets are not designer products, and to think that so many perfect creatures are needlessly put down breaks my heart. I want to give people an opportunity to contribute in a way that still feels like they are getting value for their money.”

Elena Adams Designs specializes in one-of-a-kind, artistic wear, and has in the past focused on raising awareness through single, high-end pieces. With the economy in early recovery stages, most shoppers are not able to commit to large donations, and so, for the first time, Adams has created a necklace to help her customers contribute in smaller, yet still significant ways.

Smokey quartz and iolite on a sterling silver chain create a necklace that is perfect as a fine, single chain, or beautifully layers with other chain and beaded necklaces. Adams loves to pair delicate, sterling silver chain maille with semi-precious gemstones and designed this piece to reflect her signature style.

Retailing at $35, $20 of each sale will go to benefit Best Friends.

These necklaces will be available until August 31st or while supplies last. They can be found exclusively at http://www.elena-adams.com/bestfriends

About Elena Adams Designs
Elena Adams believes that timeless jewelry should be a part of every woman’s collection, and has been creating jewelry for nearly ten years. Specializing in chain maille, she strives to maintain the classic appeal of this ancient technique, while updating it for the modern woman, using gemstones and sterling silver to create richly feminine treasures that will last a lifetime. Pet Owners Tell Eureka Vacuums About Their Pets' Personalities

Pet Owners Tell Eureka Vacuums About Their Pets' Personalities

Eureka, which makes the Pet Pal bagless upright vacuum cleaner, recently asked America's pet owners to capture their pets in action with their vacuums. Resulting videos ranged from playful pooches to scaredy-cats - with Juanky, a Boxer who lives with Melanie Gamarra in Lothian, Md., earing the title of "TopDog"in the Eureka "Fido'sFight or Flight"video contest.

Bloomington, IL (Vocus) August 4, 2010 -- While Americans know that Eureka never runs from a cleaning challenge, it can be a different story with our pets. So when the company – which makes the Pet Pal™ bagless upright vacuum cleaner – recently asked America’s pet owners to capture their pets in action with their vacuums, it was unsurprising that the stars of the resulting videos ranged from playful pooches to scaredy-cats. Ultimately, Juanky – a Boxer who lives with Melanie Gamarra in Lothian, Md. – earned the title of “Top Dog” for his enthusiastic encounter with the vacuum cleaner.

For the past five weeks, consumers logged on to www.eureka.com/petcontest to submit their 30-second videos and short description of their pets’ personalities for a chance to be featured on the site – and to win a new vacuum cleaner and Walmart gift certificate. If the results of the contest are to be believed, the struggle between furry friends and vacuums is far from over. Some pets, like Juanky, bravely battled their adversaries, while others simply fled immediately.
Of Juanky, Gamarra says, “My boxer Juanky loves things that roll across the floor. When the vacuum comes out, he goes nuts! He thinks he is protecting me or just wants to play with the vacuum. It becomes hard to vacuum at times… but it is definitely entertaining watching him try to conquer the vacuum cleaner.”

Other finalists include:
-Clancy and Kelly Ruiz of Cheyenne, Wyo.
-Ollie and Rachel Dorn of St. Paul, Minn.
-Jazzy, Snowy and Trixie, and Briana Shields of East Norriton, Penn.

“Congratulations to Juanky and the other finalists – and thanks to everyone who submitted their memorable videos and entries,” said Jackie Cooper, senior director of marketing and communications for Eureka. “We often hear stories about the different reactions that pets have to vacuum cleaners, whether they love them or loathe them. The pets’ reactions in the videos we received were very fun to watch!” As the grand prize winners, Gamarra and Juanky won a $250 Walmart gift certificate and a Eureka Pet Pal vacuum cleaner, which is designed to help pet owners tackle pesky pet hair. The other four finalists received a $50 Walmart gift certificate and a Pet Pal vacuum. All five winners will be featured on the Eureka website until August 27.

The Pet Pal vacuum cleaner offers the Hair Raiser™ for Pets tool, an innovative cleaning brush that can be used independently from the vacuum in three easy steps. First, the Hair Raiser gently but thoroughly removes stubborn pet hair from upholstery, fabric and even clothing. Then it is cleaned on-board the vacuum when the user moves the brush in and out of its holster to loosen the pet hair. Finally, with a flip of the switch, the collected pet hair is whisked away into the dust cup without the user ever needing to touch it.

In addition to Hair Raiser for Pets, the Pet Pal vacuum boasts Whirlwind Cyclonic Technology, which maintains optimal airflow and increased suction, and the PET Power Paw® tool, which uses small plastic teeth and a rubber strip to gently grab and clean pet hair from hard-to-reach areas, such as stairs. And because pet hair is not the only mess that Spot and Fluffy can leave behind, the Pet Pal vacuum cleaner offers HEPA filtration that captures 99.97 percent of dander and other allergy-causing debris.

“The videos we received from animal lovers around the country proved that our furry friends come in all shapes, sizes and personalities,” said Cooper. “The Pet Pal is designed to serve as a cleaning ally for all pets and their owners!”
