Diary Date: Animal Home to Host Children's Halloween Special in Aid of Homeless Cats -- The Mayhew Hopes the Witching Hour will Bring Luck to Homeless

London – This Halloween, The Mayhew Animal Home in North West London will be hosting a fun filled afternoon that is more party than poltergeist!

(PRWeb UK) September 28, 2010

As a chance to raise awareness for the amount of black cats struggling to find new homes, the rescue centre in Kensal Green is opening its doors for an afternoon of fun, with fancy dress, ghoulish games, tasty tarts and cakes and witches tours of the cattery and kitten cabins.

When: Sunday October 31st

Where: The Mayhew Animal Home, Trenmar Gardens, Kensal Green NW10 6BJ

Time: 1pm – 4pm

Entry: £1.50 adults, £1.00 children

Mayhew events co-ordinator, Fran Llewellin said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming lots of children to the Home this Halloween for a fun packed afternoon of games and activities, plus the chance to introduce them to our homeless cats and kittens. There are so many black cats at our rescue centre, as sadly they often get overlooked and the more uniquely-coloured felines get adopted quicker. Of course we hope that any and all of our animals find new homes quickly, but if we can draw attention to some of our lucky black cats then all the better!”

Halloween is a great opportunity for The Mayhew to highlight this issue but of course the Home still welcomes adoption enquiries for any of their residents; dog, cat, black, spotty, little, large, tortoiseshell, ginger or calico!

A Missing Cat Leads to the Opening of Minds

First book in new children’s series aims to introduce children to ideas and concepts of metaphysics

Newark, NJ (Vocus) September 29, 2010

Throughout reading and studying the various subjects of metaphysics, Mildred Tarter discovered that there were very few books written that are clear cut or precise enough for children to attain knowledge and understand, especially for pre-schoolers.

Tarter created Rexis! Where Are You! (published by AuthorHouse) as part of a series of books designed to help children as well as adults understand what metaphysics is all about and its significance in our lives. Children who are diversely gifted (mentally, physically, and spiritually) can enjoy reading about these characters and their characteristics which are also specially gifted. The book and series is meant to extend to all readers regardless of age.

“The series is not just a fun storybook,” said Tarter. “It is intended as a self-help guide of sorts and an aid for the young ones to believe in themselves as strong achievers, as would it be for anyone who embraces it.”

The story of Rexis! Where Are You! focuses on Alexis, a little girl who loses her cat, Rexis. Her friends assist her and readers with an introduction to the creativity of thinking; the nature of visualization; the power of writing; the importance in the use of colors and the magic of numbers. An excerpt from the book:

Quickly, she ran over to the counter where Rexis was sitting.
Not quite in the corner, but there, where she does knitting.
Alexis ran frantically throughout the kitchen, peering under stools.
She was sure he understood her. She was sure he knew all the rules.
She flew throughout the kitchen; she flew throughout the house.
And perhaps like Cinderella, she almost stepped on a mouse.
She looked like a loon.
She needed to find her Rexis. She needed to find him soon.

Readers of Rexis! Where Are You! can learn how to rely on themselves for problem solving and how to visualize using tools such as colors, numbers, etc. They can learn that they can visualize their creativity in recalling events and that they can do these things with or without these tools of manifestation, while teaching readers that everyone can be creative in achieving their goals.

About The Author

Iams Home 4 the Holidays Embarks on a Mission to Save the Lives of 1.5 Million Homeless Animals in Three Months

Annual Pet Adoption Drive Launches Campaign to Provide 5 Million Bowls of Food to Orphaned Pets

Mason, OH (PRWEB) October 1, 2010

One of the world’s largest pet adoption programs – Iams Home 4 the Holidays – kicked off today to help place 1.5 million orphaned pets into loving homes this holiday season. Between Oct. 1, 2010 and Jan. 4, 2011, Iams will work side-by-side with founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center and 3,500 animal organizations worldwide to not only help pets find homes but to provide 5 million bowls of food through the inaugural Bags 4 Bowls program.

Each year shelters and rescue centers are overwhelmed and overcrowded with as many as 8 million homeless animals. Because of this staggering statistic, the core mission of Iams Home 4 the Holidays continues to be to drastically reduce the number of homeless pets through adoption.
“Pet homelessness is an epidemic in our country and many animal organizations look to programs like Iams Home 4 the Holidays to help drive families to our centers to see these amazing animals,” said Mike Arms, founder of the adoption drive and president of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “We’ve been a part of the adoption drive for 12 years now and have really seen the benefit of what this program can do for animals, our employees and the families who adopt.”

While adoption is paramount, the campaign acknowledges that not everyone is in the position to bring a new pet into their home. This year visitors to Iams’ Facebook page (www.facebook.com/iams) can follow the program’s “Adoption Angels,” new pet parents chronicling their personal journeys of adoption. Visitors can see first-hand as the Angels experience the joy of adoption and how they integrate their new four-legged family member into the home.

In addition to the Adoption Angels, Iams created the Bags 4 Bowls program so that anyone can help make a difference in the lives of orphaned animals by buying a bag of Iams food. For every specially marked package of Iams dog or cat food purchased during the campaign – Oct. 1, 2010 through Jan. 4, 2011 – Iams will donate one bowl of food to a participating animal organization.* Additionally, anyone can visit the Facebook page and “Like” the page itself, various messages, photos, videos, etc. posted by the Adoption Angels and in return Iams will donate up to 100 meals per “Like” or comment to feed orphaned animals.

“We’re very proud of the fact that we’ve helped more than 4.6 million animals find homes over the last 11 years,” said Maria Beatriz Rodriguez, Iams general manager. “Our core mission has been and remains to reduce pet homelessness through adoption. However we want to empower everyone
to get involved and make difference so we created the Bags 4 Bowls program. Our goal is to find homes for 1.5 million animals and provide 5 million bowls of food – that’s a lot of permanent homes and meals for millions of deserving animals.”

Iams Home 4 the Holidays strives to educate about the importance of adoption so that every pet adopted goes to a permanent, loving home. Families who adopt through the program will receive an Iams adoption kit loaded with important information about nutrition, training and proper care to ensure that the relationship with the new animal starts off on the right paw.
Iams works with all of the partnering organizations to ensure they have the tools needed to promote themselves and their pets. One of the primary tools Iams shares with participants is a detailed “how-to-guide” that includes template materials, guides for event planning, tips for working within their local communities, and more. Iams has also established a dedicated toll-free phone number (800-421-6456 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 800-421-6456 end_of_the_skype_highlighting) for animal organizations to call seven days a week for help and guidance with adoption needs and questions.

October 16 Marks 10th Annual National Feral Cat Day

Movement to Embrace Humane Programs for Feral Cats Gains Momentum across U.S.

Bethesda, MD (Vocus) October 1, 2010

National Feral Cat Day (October 16) celebrates a milestone in 2010 -- its tenth anniversary. Alley Cat Allies first launched National Feral Cat Day in 2001 as a kickoff to a national education campaign about feral cats.

“Feral cats are domestic cats, but are not socialized to people and are therefore unadoptable,” said Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies. “If a feral cat is brought to a shelter they are almost always killed. This is why so many communities have adopted Trap-Neuter-Return programs as a way to care for and manage feral cats.”

Trap-Neuter-Return improves the cats’ lives by ending the breeding cycle. The cats no longer undergo the stresses associated with mating and pregnancy and the population stabilizes because there are no new kittens.

Cats in Trap-Neuter-Return programs are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. While the cat is under anesthesia, a small portion of the left ear -- called an “eartip” -- is removed, signaling the cat has been neutered and vaccinated.

These cats have been living outside among people for 10,000 years -- they are not a new phenomenon. Feral cats live healthy lives and thrive in any landscape, from rural to urban.

“Since the very first National Feral Cat Day, hundreds of thousands of supporters have signed on to help feral cats in their communities, and the movement continues to build,” said Robinson. “Americans want compassionate programs for cats, including Trap-Neuter-Return.”

Nearly 100 events are already scheduled nationwide to celebrate National Feral Cat Day. For a complete listing, or more information, visit www.alleycat.org/NFCD .

Cardio-Renal Symposium Reveals How the Heart and Kidneys Interact In Dogs and Cats with Cardiac Disease, Renal Disease, and Systemic Hypertension

Affected patients’ outcomes are optimized through appropriate diet and drug therapy, including ACE inhibitors, and early intervention

Overland Park, KS (PRWEB) October 2, 2010

Veterinarians attending Vétoquinol’s Cardio-renal Symposium at the CVC in Kansas City on August 29 heard three leading veterinary internists summarize published research and clinical studies that support:

  • The numerous benefits of using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) in dogs and cats with cardiac disease, renal disease, and hypertension;
  • The crucial reasons to monitor for proteinuria and systemic hypertension in veterinary patients with renal disease; and
  • The fundamental need to restrict dietary phosphorus in dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease.

The keynote speakers were

  • Clarke Atkins, DVM, DACVIM, professor of medicine and cardiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University
  • Gregory F. Grauer, DVM, MS, DACVIM, professor and Jarvis chair of small animal internal medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University
  • Larry G. Adams, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, professor of small animal internal medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University

In patients with heart disease and reduced cardiac output, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is activated, which ultimately leads to additional cardiovascular and renal damage. Thus, blunting the effects of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system with medications such as an ACEI is beneficial for the heart, kidneys, and general vasculature, says Dr. Clarke Atkins. Yet, when ACEIs were introduced for veterinary patients with heart disease, concern arose that these drugs might contribute to renal disease. However, numerous studies in dogs, cats, and people have dispelled that myth.

“ACE inhibitors are not only not nephrotoxic, but they actually benefit renal function,” said Dr. Atkins. “ACE inhibitors are the cornerstone in the chronic treatment of heart failure. I believe they are indicated in all systolic heart failure, they appear to be safe, they are renal-sparing, particularly with glomerular disease, they play a role as an antihypertensive, they improve duration and quality of life, and they also have benefits prior to the onset of heart failure.” Dr. Atkins wants veterinarians to feel comfortable using ACEIs in patients with phase II cardiac disease and beyond, and recognize that ACEIs are probably indicated from the time proteinuria is identified in patients with renal disease, and finally, that ACEIs are indicated from the time a patient is identified to have systemic hypertension.

Dr. Greg Grauer agrees. “Most of us don’t feel that you can harm patients with renal disease with ACE inhibitors,” says Dr. Grauer. He summarized data that show as more nephrons are lost in association with intraglomerular hypertension, and as glomerulosclerosis, an irreversible lesion, develops, nephrons are replaced with fibrous scar tissue, resulting in a vicious cycle. As more nephrons are lost, “the RAAS brings more vasopressor agents to bear and more tissue remodeling to bear, and at the level of the kidney that’s associated with increased fibrous scar tissue production.” Dr. Grauer is conducting a two-year clinical study at KSU CVM in cats that have stage 2 or 3 chronic kidney disease to compare the effects of Rubenal, a Vétoquinol renal care product that contains medicinal rhubarb to help protect healthy renal tissue by minimizing the effects of cytokine expression, vs. benazepril. He says that data regarding the efficacy of Rubenal should be available at the ACVIM Forum in spring 2011.

Dr. Grauer summarized studies that reveal that proteinuria and systemic hypertension, which result from activation of the RAAS, are things that DVMs should be concerned about and testing, monitoring, and eventually treating for.

Dr. Grauer left his colleagues in the audience with an important question: Are proteinuria and hypertension simply markers of more severe chronic kidney disease that is more likely to be rapidly progressive, or do one or both mediate progressive renal injury? “If they do mediate progressive renal injury, then treatments designed to attenuate them, to lower or normalize blood pressure or to reduce proteinuria, are likely to be renoprotective and improve survival,” adds Dr. Grauer.

Dr. Larry Adams reviewed well-known studies that show feeding a renal diet—one that is protein- and phosphorus-restricted—vs. a maintenance diet delays the onset of clinical signs of uremia and improves survival in dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease. “Phosphorus restriction is probably fundamental to any renal diet and is critical,” says Dr. Adams. Dr. Adams emphasized the importance of treating renal secondary hyperparathyroidism, an often-overlooked aspect of treating chronic kidney disease.

Veterinarians overlook this condition because these patients’ serum phosphorous concentration is often within the reference range. However, Dr. Adams says that veterinarians must aim for a serum phosphorous concentration that remains in the low normal range—less than 5 mg/dl in patients with stage 2 and 3 kidney disease, and no higher than 6 in patients with stage 4 chronic kidney disease.

In order to achieve that, Dr. Adams says veterinarians should start by feeding a renal diet, then add an intestinal phosphate binder if the phosphorous concentration is normal but not within that target low-normal range. In a study published in 2008 from the University of Georgia, Epakitin, a chitosan-based nutritional supplement from Vétoquinol that binds phosphate in the intestine, was shown to significantly reduce serum phosphorous and parathyroid hormone concentrations in cats with stage 2 chronic kidney disease within 56 days without raising calcium levels.

Intestinal phosphate binders that can be mixed directly in the food, are effective, and palatable, such as Epakitin, will be of greatest benefit and most economical in patients with chronic kidney disease, says Dr. Adams.

Pet Insurance Company's Referral Program Helps Those in Need

Trupanion announces a new referral program that includes an option to donate to one of four national charities.

Seattle, WA (Vocus) October 4, 2010

Trupanion, the nation’s fastest-growing pet insurance company, has launched a new referral program that offers participants the opportunity to donate money to one of four national charities, simply by referring others to Trupanion.

To take part in the program, participants create a unique referral link that they can share with friends and family. When a pet owner uses the link to enroll a pet in a Trupanion pet insurance policy, the referrer receives $20, which he or she can choose to donate to one of four national charities. Trupanion will also donate an extra $5 on the referrer’s behalf to the pet charity of the month.

“We know many of our customers and potential customers are charitable,” said Darren DeFeo, Senior Vice President at Trupanion, “so we wanted to give them a way to make an impact, while also educating their friends and family about the benefits of pet insurance.”

Currently, participants are able to donate to the American Red Cross, Noah’s Wish, National Mill Dog Rescue, or Paws Animal Rescue.

This referral program is not limited to current Trupanion customers and employees. Anyone can generate their own unique referral link, and there is no limit to how many people one can refer.

A qualified referral is defined as an enrollment made on Trupanion’s site by a person who arrives at the site via another person’s referral link. The referrer and the referee cannot be the same person or members of the same household.

Referral links can be created at http://www.trupanionpetinsurance.com/Home/ReferAFriend.

Getting Your Furry Friend into the Howl'oween Spirit

Pet Lifestyle Author/Expert and PETCO Spokesperson, Sandy Robins, Lists The Do's & Don'ts of Dressing Pets this Halloween

San Diego, CA (Vocus) October 5, 2010

From “Hairy” Potter to Robert “Cat” inson to Count “Bark”ula; people love dressing up their four-legged friends for Halloween. However, it’s not always easy to get furry pals in costume. Pet-lifestyle author/expert and PETCO spokesperson, Sandy Robins, shares her do’s and don’ts of including pets in Halloween festivities so they don't go running for cover when it's time to trick-or-treat.

DO's

  • Purchase the outfit well in advance and allow your pet to try it out at home on several occasions.
  • Dress your pet right before an event. If participating in a costume parade or contest, dress your pet just before the line-up, as some costumes can be warm. “Take plenty of water along for your pet to lap up,” says Robins. Keeping your pet hydrated is very important. To find a Howl'oween event in your area, use the store locator at www.petco.com.
  • “The summer blockbuster movies are always a great source of inspiration for costumes,” says Robins. “No doubt that this year we will see a lot of Persian canine princes, Ironman doggies and Twilight vampires.” Other perennial favorites include ladybugs, jack-o-lanterns and devils. The bumblebee remains the most popular doggie costume of all time.
  • Get creative! If you want to step outside the box, you can turn your cat into a Chippendales dancer with a festive bow tie or your mutt into Bob Marley; your options are endless. “Large stores, like PETCO, sell a variety of fun accessories that will help you create the best costume for your pet,” says Robins.
  • Consider other creative ways to show your spirit. If your pet simply refuses to dress up, consider a Howl’oween-inspired bandana or collar and leash patterned with pumpkins and sculls. Robins also suggests, “a leash with flashing LED lights for safety. This can be a fun accessory too.” Look for soft, lightweight fabrics with no loose ties. Also, avoid any ornamentation that could possibly be swallowed.

DON'Ts

  • Don't tailor a children’s costume to fit canine needs. Robins points out, “Children’s costumes often have stronger elastic which would irritate a dog around the head and neck areas.”
  • Don't keep your cat in costume too long. Cats especially aren’t fond of wearing clothes, so keep the session short, just long enough for a photograph!
  • Don’t head out without up-to-date identification tags under your pets’ costume. Robins states, “Pets can get spooked with all the Halloween excitement so this is a vital part of your costume.”

To celebrate the Howl’ oween spirit, PETCO is sponsoring a costume contest. Pets are invited to post their photos and say why they chose their Halloween costume for a chance to win over $1,000 in prizes. The public can go to: www.petco.com/contest to enter and vote for their favorites through October 29, 2010.

The author was six years old when he had his very first buddy—an adorable Spitz named Fluffy. They grew up together and did everything together. After eleven years of laughter and tears, Fluffy went on to wait for him at the Rainbow Bridge. But her passing was just the beginning of the author’s wonderful life shared with four-legged animals. Through vivid narration, Smith relives his many encounters and adventures with dogs, cats, ponies, and cows. While on some occasions saved from being strayed, and on other times acquired as gifts from friends or bought from pet shops, each of the animals—whether young or old and big or small—had a special place in the author’s life.

From crazy shenanigans to lesson-filled failure, from funny experiences to tragic accidents, Sixty-Five Years of Four-Legged Friends captures one man’s amusing, inspiring, and simply beautiful moments shared with creatures that may not be able to talk but could very well respond with affection and reciprocate with love.

Sixty-Five Years of Four-Legged Friends will be featured at the New York Library Association Book Exhibit in Saratoga Springs, NY, which will run November 2-5, 2010. This book is enrolled in Xlibris’ Bookstore Returnability Program, which gives booksellers the convenient option of returning excess stocks through Ingram Distribution. Readers who wish to learn more about this book can log on to Xlibris.com.

DAD'S Pet Care® to Honor Founder and Expand Corporate Mission by Announcing a New Parent Company, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition®

America’s oldest privately-owned pet food company is reorganizing under a new corporate umbrella company called Ainsworth Pet Nutrition®.

Meadville, PA (Vocus) September 13, 2010

America’s oldest privately-owned pet food company is reorganizing under a new corporate umbrella company called Ainsworth Pet Nutrition®. DAD’S Pet Care® was founded in 1933 by George Ainsworth Lang Sr., and his father. The new structure will help the company better represent its more diversified product portfolio developed through a series of strategic business initiatives over the past decade.

“We have made several acquisitions and investments to expand our capabilities and have added exciting new products to our portfolio,” said Sean Lang, CEO of Ainsworth Pet Nutrition and the great-great-grandson of the company’s founder. “The company has evolved from a small regional business to a multi-tiered North American organization that makes a wide spectrum of pet foods and snacks. We’re excited that our new name honors Granddad Ainsworth and his life-long focus – creating nutritious, high quality foods and treats for dogs and cats.”

Series of Aggressive Acquisitions and Innovations Lead to Reorganization
Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the result of an ambitious strategic plan aimed at expanding the company’s product and production capabilities. The company has made investments in the following companies:

  • Hampshire Pet Products (organic certified facility for baked food and snacks);
  • Targeted Pet Treats (injection formed snacks and chews);
  • Gaines of Canada;
  • Back to Basics® (ultra premium dog food);
  • Arkat Animal Nutrition.

Each of these businesses specializes in unique product and/or production technologies. ARKAT Animal Nutrition was acquired in February 2010, providing new manufacturing facilities and two well-known specialty pet food brands, VF Complete® and Enhance®. A more than $10 million investment in new state-of-the-art manufacturing enhancements and a 70 percent increase in the workforce at the Dumas, Ark. facility were announced in June 2010.

Internal product innovations have also paved the way for growth. Rachael Ray NutrishTM dog food arrived on store shelves in 2008, and Rachael Ray Nutrish Just 6TM dog treats and The SourceTM dog treats were introduced in 2010.

Company Reorganizes Into Three Business Units
DAD’S Pet Care will continue to operate as one of three business units now part of Ainsworth Pet Nutrition. Ainsworth Specialty BrandsTM and Ainsworth CustomTM are the other two divisions.

“Our reorganization ensures that each of our business units and brands have the R&D, innovation, funding and focus they deserve,” said Lang. “We’ve also established dedicated teams of marketing experts and sales professionals who can address the needs of each specific business.”

Food safety is the number one priority across all three business units. “We ensure premium ingredient quality, precise cooking methods and a focus on safety that is unsurpassed in the marketplace today,” said Lang. “In fact, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the first pet food manufacturer in the U.S. to earn a Safe Quality Foods rating of Excellent, the highest rating that can be attained through the Level 2, Global Food Safety Initiative.”

Ainsworth Specialty Brands
Ainsworth Specialty Brands caters to pet owners who require specialized, ultra premium nutrition for their pet. The brands in the Ainsworth Specialty Brands portfolio deliver the highest ingredient quality and advanced nutrition science. Products are all manufactured in facilities owned by Ainsworth Pet Nutrition right here in the United States.

Ainsworth Specialty Brands ultra-premium pet products are sold exclusively to specialty stores as well as farm and feed retail outlets. The products include:

  • VF Complete: Approachable nutrition with all natural ingredients;
  • Enhance: The all-season nutrition solution for high performance sporting dogs;
  • Back to Basics: Grain-free ultra-premium pet foods and treats that deliver uncomplicated, holistic pet nutrition;
  • The SourceTM: Premium ingredients with a purpose for pets’ overall health and well-being.

“These brands are uniquely designed to address the specialized needs of certain pets,” said Lang. “This winter we are re-launching Back to Basics which will play an entirely different role in the category in 2011.”

DAD’S Pet Care
The DAD’S Pet Care division houses brands and selective retailer brands that provide sound nutrition, value and convenience. They include:

  • DAD’S®: A full line of affordably-priced dog and cat foods made with ingredients sourced from local farms;
  • Rachael Ray Nutrish: Premium nutrition for pets with simple, natural ingredients. The Nutrish food line features meat as the first ingredient and no by-products. Rachael Ray’s proceeds go to help animals in need;
  • Kibble Select CompleteTM: The perfect combination of great taste and great nutrition for dogs;
  • Better Than: Surprising, clever and unexpected dog treats that are safe and healthy.

“The DAD’S brands will continue to be a keystone of our growth plans and have satisfied multiple generations of dogs using locally sourced ingredients,” Lang emphasized.

Rachael Ray Nutrish has been a significant charitable endeavor. Rachael Ray donates her proceeds from the sale of Nutrish to help animals in need through Rachael’s RescueTM. More than $1 million has been raised since the product line launched in Fall 2008.

The Dad’s Pet Care business unit will also continue to serve the needs of retailers through development and supply of innovative retailer brands. “We approach these brands as if they are our own by applying our marketing expertise and resources to further their development,” explained Lang.

Ainsworth Custom
This division caters to business partners who require custom solutions to fit their unique needs. Ainsworth Custom goes beyond providing manufacturing services by also supporting product and brand development. This custom manufacturing division produces a wide variety of super-premium brands. "We produce innovative products for more than 30 ultra premium brands across our matrix," said Elliott Haverlack, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition's chief operating officer.

Ainsworth Pet Nutrition Experiences Record Growth Despite Recession
While many businesses across the United States have struggled in recent years, Ainsworth Pet Nutrition has flourished. In fact, the company has experienced more than 100 percent organic (not counting acquisitions) growth since 2006, and the company has tripled its investment in marketing, sales and R&D departments during this period.

“Pet food is the only thing we do and it’s the only thing we’ve ever done in our 77 year history,” said Lang. “Our family has always been dedicated to pet parents and their furry family members, and that focus will continue as we make aggressive investments in growth and innovation over the months and years ahead. Granddad Ainsworth always taught the younger Langs about the temporary nature of success, and we continue to work hard to earn the trust of our pet parents every day.”

About Ainsworth Pet Nutrition®
Ainsworth Pet Nutrition® is a fifth generation family-owned and operated company named after one of the company founders, George Ainsworth Lang. The company is focused entirely on pets, catering to all segments of the pet food industry. Ainsworth Pet Nutrition has three business units including DAD’S Pet Care®, Ainsworth Specialty BrandsTM and Ainsworth CustomTM. The company makes a wide spectrum of pet foods and snacks, from brands that offer sound nutrition and convenience to ultra-premium specialty foods. Luxury Pets® Furnishings & Accessories will launch today with its debut Dream Collection at SuperZoo 2010, the National Show for Pet Retailers in Las Vegas (booth #1866). The complete Dream Collection combines luxury, beauty and style and has everything to suit a discriminating pet's needs. It features collars, bowls, beds, blankets, jackets, pendants, treats and leashes for dogs and cats.

Ad-executive turned designer and CEO Keith Sanna is the creator of Luxury Pets® Furnishings & Accessories. While enrolled in the pet fashion design program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, Sanna showcased a preview of select items from his line during Pet Fashion Week NY 2010. The designs garnered tremendous attention and acclaim from attendees, designers and media. Sanna explains, "I am thrilled to unveil the full Dream Collection for the first time. I wanted to create a comprehensive and environmentally responsible line of upscale pet products for our cherished four-legged friends. Functionality, high-quality and durability go hand-in-hand with gorgeous design and styling. Our products are designed to enhance and blend with both the owners' and pets' lifestyle."

The line will be sold online, in high-end department stores, finer hotels, and pet boutiques throughout the world. For an updated list, visit www.luxurypets.com. Sanna and business partner Michael Gallotta hand-selected eco-friendly fabrics and materials to reduce the impact on the environment. The complete Dream Collection features high quality and durable materials including Italian leather handles for the leashes, marble and granite bowls, lambskin leather bomber jackets and silk windbreakers.

Luxury Pets grew from an idea of creating leashes and beds for pets that would go beyond everyday standards and blend with the owner's lifestyle and home surroundings. It quickly became apparent that there was a similar need for fashion forward accessories to complement the pet owner's style and apparel. Sanna and Gallotta began to grow with the line of luxury beds, blankets and started creating unique bowls, collars, leashes and apparel for friends and family. The word soon traveled to the large dog community, and a specific custom order line was showcased by two twin Great Dane beauties who were the inspiration for the Dane sized beds!

Luxury Pets' beds are available in two original silhouettes, the Heart bed and the decorative Pettifor bed and are available in small, medium and large sizes (which invites a nap and sleeps one person and dog comfortably). The signature heart beds are luxurious and eye-catching and complement a home. The decorative Pettifor bed is crafted with fine soft all-natural angora wool. Made with environmentally responsible and washable EcoDesign™ UltraSuede, Luxury Pets’ beds are filled with 100% nature-based eco-friendly filler and are available in four sizes. The blankets coordinate with the beds and are available in two styles: The Sunday Morning Blanket and the Sweet Slumber Blanket. The blankets are two-toned and available in four sizes.

Luxury Pets’ leashes come in six different styles and colors for pets of all sizes and lifestyles. The Fifth Avenue Leash features all natural wool and a cashmere-lined handle. The Provence Leash is fashioned with Mohair wool, and the various other styles feature the Luxury Pets designer logo along with leather-lined handles.

Luxury Pets’ collars offer comfort and sophistication for your pet. The Natural Elegance Collar is crafted with Gregorian ribbon, pink pearls, soft lamb’s leather and a padded inner lining. The Via Torino and Boulevard Collars are made from luxurious houndstooth wool. Give the gift of an engraved heart collar pendant in either gold or silver (based with nickel plated zinc) to complement the leashes.

Combining natural materials and fabrics with an eye for detail and design, the Worth Avenue Collection jackets and windbreakers will keep your pet warm and stylish. The Leather Bomber is reversible and available in two different styles and colors.

Sturdy, sleek, and sophisticated, Luxury Pets’ granite and marble bowls will never spill and complement a kitchen or living space. Designed to accent modern homes, the single and double basin bowl combinations are available in a variety of colors.

The Organic Hearts & Star treats are made from human-grade ingredients. Luxury Pets’ treats and treat baskets are available in several flavors such as Roast Beef & Potato, Sesame Garlic, Alaskan Salmon, Crispy Cheese, and Sweet Potato.

Networking via Blogging Saves Pets' Lives! Liz Marshall at lizardmarsh.net Helps Rescuers and Encourages More People to Do the Same

Rescuers are needed to save innocent animals. Rescuers need financial assistance in order to save dogs and cats from shelters, and from homelessness, abandonment, abuse and other emergencies. Many people wish they knew more about how to help the homeless animals. Blogging, sharing, retweeting, cross posting and donating are ways to help.

Bellingham, WA (PRWEB) September 15, 2010

Especially since the foreclosure crisis, and because of the poor economy in general, the trend of surrendering pets to animal shelters has sadly skyrocketed. The rates of foreclosure and surrendering may not slow down soon. However, the good news is that the rescue field is vast, many people are trying desperately to rescue, and other people want to help the rescuers. More help is definitely needed.

Liz Marshall is a volunteer rescue cross poster who blogs and networks for pet rescue. Her blog lizardmarsh.net helps to rapidly disseminate alerts regarding cats and dogs needing rescue, as well as the need for charitable contributions to help the people who are heroically rescuing cats, dogs and other innocent animals. This is done by posting the message on the blog, then having it automatically syndicated on, for example, Facebook and Twitter. The post is also automatically going into the blogosphere via LinkedIn, MySpace, and more sites. Other people pick up the feeds without Liz Marshall knowing (which is generally fine and welcome). Liz also sends the URL for the blog post to lists of recipients, including Yahoo groups such as (to name just one among hundreds of possibilities) Foster Homes To The Rescue Yahoo group, in an email. Readers of the blog on the web and recipients of the email are welcome and encouraged to forward the link, retweet, and share. Networking does save lives.

The associated blog lizardmarshmart.net showcases appeals which are particularly focused on the need for financial gifts to support rescues, as opposed to the need to find rescuers, foster homes, or volunteer transporters willing to physically step up for a specific pet or group of pets. It is also a place for people to do fun, environmentally-friendly shopping. Some bloggers and webmasters have tabs for their shopping and donating sections, but in this example a second blog seemed to be an organized solution.

Technological advances in simple email, digital photography, videos, and social media have made it easier to spread the word (and pictures) about pets in danger. Many people are gripped by the apparent hopelessness of shelter animals and other animals in distress. With blogging, emailing, and social media sites, many more of these caring people can participate in saving lives by getting information and photos out to family, friends, and other associates in their network. They can also donate, no matter where in the world they are. Through mechanisms such as PayPal, ChipIn, FirstGiving and so on, it is fast and efficient for many people to join forces to raise funds for a specific pet or group of pets.

For three years, lizardmarsh.net has been one of the sites useful for getting the word out. The use of blog post links which can be so easily forwarded, and have the advantage of not losing the picture or original content, is recommended. Often, in forwarding emails to others' email in-boxes, content and photos are lost or garbled. A blog retains the original message and photos in tact and also can be updated at any time which means everyone who received the first transmission of the blog link in their inbox will see updates in a link if they are looking at it later.

Rescue cross posters are volunteers who take the initiative to help "original posters" reach wider audiences when they ask for it. First, the original observer, good Samaritan who “accidentally” rescued a pet off the street, a rescuer or other individual or organization puts an email in play to attract the needed help for an animal emergency, rescue, transport, or fundraiser. Then the rescue cross posters, which can include individuals using their email lists or Yahoo groups or blogs such as lizardmarsh.net, help with that communication effort. Presently many rescuers are full and strapped financially, so it is important to cross post widely to summon help. It is vitally important to reach increasing numbers of people in order to attract new and potential rescuers to the field.

Many people make generous donations to animal rescue. The need for additional and future generous donors to continue supporting the work of rescue is huge. As more and more charitable people can be reached to help facilitate rescues, more lives can be saved. Thankfully more people are rallying to physical rescue and to financially support the rescuers. Rescuers are seriously needed. Quick and efficient networkers are needed too. Donations are also needed. These are some of the ways more people have the opportunity to pitch in.

About Liz Marshall
Liz has been networking for pet rescue since Hurricane Katrina. The crisis of animals in shelters has always been dire, due to lack of spaying and neutering, and other reasons. With the increase in terrible events such as Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf Oil Disaster, even more pressures put multitudes of animals at risk of abandonment. Bell Rock Growers Showcases New Pet Greens® Crunchy Cat Treats at SuperZoo

New Pet Greens® Crunchy Cat Treats help control tartar and deliver green nutrition with wheat grass. Now available in three all-natural, grain-free recipes, made with nutritious greens, turkey, chicken, salmon, and other wholesome ingredients. Pet Greens Crunchy Cat Treats are showcased Sept. 14-16 at SuperZoo, booth 2354.

San Marcos, CA (PRWEB) September 15, 2010

Bell Rock Growers, the pioneer grower and supplier of green nutrition products for pets, adds tartar control crunchy treats to their popular line of Pet Greens® Treats for cats. New Pet Greens Crunchy Cat Treats are all-natural recipes, made with nutritious greens, turkey, chicken, salmon, and other wholesome ingredients. All varieties are grain free and contain no wheat gluten, no corn or soy, and no artificial colors or flavors. Available in three varieties - Turkey & Veggie, Chicken Pot Pie and Seafood Salad - Pet Greens Crunchy Cat Treats, Powered with Green Nutrition®, will be showcased during the SuperZoo pet industry trade show Sept. 14-16, 2010, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada (booth 2354).

Now cats can enjoy healthy and delicious Pet Greens Treats with the added benefit of a crunchy recipe to help control tartar and plaque buildup. "Studies show up to 90 percent of domestic cats develop dental issues. Including crunchy treats in a cat's diet is a great way to help improve dental health," says Bell Rock Growers Co-Founder Catherine Hoffmann.

Pet Greens Treats are the pet food industry's only line of cat and dog treats made with nutrient-rich wheat grass. While wheat grass and pet treats may seem like an unusual combination, Hoffmann says Pet Greens Treats are a tasty, convenient way to deliver green nutrition that is missing in most commercially produced pet foods. "Cats and dogs have a natural attraction to greens. While dogs are considered omnivores and cats carnivores, they are both able to digest plant-based foods and benefit from their powerful nutrients," says Hoffmann, who has co-authored an e-book on the topic. The e-book, called 'Why Green Nutrition? Exploring the Nutritional Benefits of Wheat Grass for Pets,' is available for free downloads at www.bellrockgrowers.com.

Wheat grass is one of the finest sources of antioxidant vitamins, minerals and other nutrients for cats, dogs, birds, reptiles and small animals. Wheat grass also provides a safe alternative to potentially harmful household plants and chemically treated outside grasses.

Pet Greens Treats have a suggested retail price of $3.99 - $4.29 for 3 oz. packages of semi-moist and crunchy cat treats in all varieties. Retailer prices may vary. Retailers and distributors who visit Bell Rock Growers at SuperZoo (booth 2354) in Las Vegas will receive Pet Greens samples and exclusive show offers.

Keeping the Fur From Flying -- Veterinarians Turn to Central Vacuums for Hair, Dander Control

Veterinarians and other pet care providers are relying on central vacuum systems to create healthier exam and treatment rooms for pets and pet owner. The systems assure quick cleanups and prevent the spread of pet hair, dander and other allergens.

Andover, KS (PRWEB) August 16, 2010

When new clients bring their dogs and cats to Countryside Pet Clinic many express surprise that the clinic is quiet and virtually odor free. Dr. Kevin Cederberg, the veterinarian who founded the practice and a pet resort in suburban Wichita, credits much of the clinic’s hospitable atmosphere to his decision to install central vacuum systems in both facilities.

“By keeping it clean, you’re definitely removing a lot of the regular and perceived odors of a veterinary clinic,” Cederberg says. “Quietness is a big thing for us. You can get the vacuuming done with a critical-care patient present or with clients in the waiting room or exam rooms and they’re really not aware of a vacuum at all.”

Allen Ibsen, a veterinarian from Brookfield, Wis., who designs veterinary clinics across the country, has long included central vacuum systems in his designs.

“It takes a lot of labor to keep the veterinary hospitals clean,” says Ibsen. “I encourage central vacuums in the hospitals that I design for convenience and to speed up the cleaning process.”

From a business standpoint, the faster the cleaning process between appointments enhances staff efficiency and may allow veterinarians to serve more patients each day.

Cheney Door Co., a BEAM Central Vacuum System dealer, installed the first system for Cederberg in 1996 and recently replaced the unit with the BEAM Serenity QS power unit which quietly delivers 600 air watts of cleaning power – up to five times more powerful than a traditional upright or canister vacuum. A BEAM system also is installed in the neighboring Pet Resort, which provides day-care and boarding services for dogs and cats, including patients from the clinic.

Kenny Bomholt, sales manager at Cheney Door says that pet care industry represents a growing segment of his business. “Having a central vacuum system allows a veterinarian or even a pet grooming business to keep their facilities cleaner and to clean more quickly and that allows them to care for more pets,” he says.

Cederberg noted that his system is in constant use when patients are prepped for surgeries and to prevent hair from the surgical site during the procedures.

“Dogs and cats tend to shed more when they’re excited or nervous so we see a lot more hair that flies around,” Cederberg says.

Pet dander, especially cat dander, is a leading allergy trigger in humans and Cederberg says installing a central vacuum system in the home may be a smart decision for allergic pet owners. In fact, Cederberg recently installed a central vacuum in his own home.

“Anything we can do to reduce exposure to the dander and the hair, that’s good.”

Pet Insurance Can Offer Peace of Mind in a Strained Economy

Pet health care still ranks important when money is tight.

Seattle, WA (Vocus) August 9, 2010

Despite the economic downturn, spending on pets continues to increase, and veterinary care is at the top of the list. Pet owners are looking for ways to ease the financial burden of high veterinary bills, and are increasingly turning to pet insurance. Trupanion, a pet insurance company, has doubled in size each year for the last three years, as many pet owners start seeing pet health coverage as a necessity rather than a perk. Pet owners are looking for a simple plan that covers everything – accident, illness, medication, and lab work – and are finding it at Trupanion.

Pet industry spending grew 4.63% between 2008 and 2009 and is expected to grow another 5.53% in 2010, according to a report by the American Pet Products Association, showing that pet owners are still increasing their spending in categories like food, supplies, grooming, boarding, and veterinary care.

However, a report released by the Commerce Department Tuesday showed flat personal spending in June and the weakest income in nine months. A 9.5% unemployment rate adds to the lack of disposable income, and those who are employed are not making any more than they did last year, according to the report.

Yet, a study by BNResearch titled “Perceptions and Attitudes of Pet Owners: The Impact of the Bond” showed that 76% of pet owners would spend any amount to keep their pet healthy, and 52% of pet owners would always do what a vet recommends, regardless of cost. It seems as if pet owners are shelling out more for their pets than for themselves.

“In tough economic times, pet owners are searching for ways to bridge the gap between the increasing costs of quality pet care and their ability to pay, particularly when an unexpected major illness or injury occurs,” says Howard Rubin, Chief Operating Officer at Trupanion and founding CEO of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues. “It decreases the financial strain and emotional stress a pet owner feels if the unthinkable happens.”

According to the APPA, dog owners spend an average of $219 on veterinary visits annually and cat owners spend an average of $175. Veterinary care is the second highest spending category behind food, with $12.04 billion spent in 2009.

Pet owners make up a majority of the population, with 62% of U.S. households owning a pet. If they continue to spend as they have been, this could be good news for the economy.
